AU will have a sexuality and queer studies minor next semester. Former Student Government President Sarah McBride, along with the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, advocated for the minor’s creation during her term.
McBride and former director of LGBTQ activism Ki’tay Davidson began developing the minor in October 2011. SG’s Undergraduate Senate supported the proposed curriculum in late 2011, SG Director of LGBTQ Advocacy Tyler Bowders said in an email.
“The sexuality and queer studies minor entails a detailed look into sexuality theories as well as queer theory,” Bowders said. “It will also provide historical background on LGBTQ issues and help students to strategize ways in which to work on the issues.”
SG worked with faculty to get support for and advice about the sexuality and queer studies minor. Students worked closely with the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program to gather ideas about the curriculum.
“AU is helping drive the LGBTQ movement forward with its forward thinking and inclusive environment,” SG Director of Communications and Marketing Rosemary Cipriano said in an email. “We cannot forget, though, that the fight [for LGBTQ rights] is not yet over and there is still so much to do.”
